Botanical Description:

  • Leathery dark green elliptic lanceolate leaves up to 7cm.

Parts used: Leaves, essential oil.

Constituents:

  • Volatile oil – up to 3%, cineole.

  • Sesquiterpenes

  • Lignan glycosides.

Actions:

  • Stomachic

  • Cholagogue

  • Diaphoretic

  • Stimulant

  • Antiseptic, antifungal.

Uses:

  • Essential oil used externally for rheumatism.

  • Culinary herb stimulates digestion.

Safety:

  • Essential oil not used during pregnancy.

  • Rare cases of contact dermatitis from allergy to essential oil.
