Amaranth

Latin: Amaranthus hypochondriacus L.

Synonyms: Love-lies-bleeding, red cockscomb.

Botanical Description:

  • Flattened stems bear clusters of minute flowers which are hidden by tapering red coloured bracts.

  • Flowers August till the first frost.

Parts used: Flowering herb.

Constituents:

  • Magenta red pigment

  • Saponins

Actions:

  • Astringent

Uses:

  • Menorrhagia.

  • Diarrhoea, IBS.

  • Decoction internally applied for mouth and throat ulcers and ulcerating conditions. Topically for leg ulcers.

Safety:

  • Presumed safe, reports of unsafe actions are unsubstantiated. Widely used as a food colourant.
