Burdock

Latin: Arctium lappa L.

Synonyms: Great burdock, beggars buttons, lappa, burdane, thorny burr.

Botanical Description:

  • Biennial with stout, longitudinally furrowed wooly stems 90cm – 2m tall.

  • Large ovate or heart shaped leaves up to about 40cm larger at the base than on stems.

  • Round purpleish pink flower heads 'burrs' appear Juy – September and have hooked tips for dispersal by attaching to animals.

Parts used: Root, herbs, fruits (seeds).

Constituents:

  • Lignans

  • Inulin

  • Sesquiterpenes

Actions:

  • Demulcent

  • Diuretic, alterative

  • Nutritive

Uses:

  • Skin conditions topically and internally as a decoction; eczema, psoriasis, acne, bites, impetigo, herpes.

  • Regulates immune responses, potential anti allergy.

  • Rheumatism.

Safety:

  • Not for use during pregnancy or lactation.
