Silverweed

Latin: Potentilla anserina L.

Botanical Description:

  • Silvery pinnate leaves with 12-15 toothed leaflets.

  • Bright yellow solitary flowers.

Parts used: Herb.

Constituents:

  • Elagitannins – catechin

  • Flavonoids

  • Coumarins

Actions:

  • Astringent

  • Tonic

Uses:

  • Mouth wash for gingivitis.

  • Topically for small cuts, ulcers and inflammation.

  • Leaves can be eaten for food – though it is commented that you probably wouldn’t bother as they are so small and gathering would be so time consuming.

Safety:

  • Not in general use.
